Medveđa (Serbian Cyrillic: Медвећа, Albanian: Medvegja) is a town and municipality in Jablanica District of Serbia, bordering Kosovo. According to the 1991 census, the municipality of Medveđa had a population of 13,368 people, while according to the 2002 census, the municipality population numbered 10,760 people. The town of Medveđa itself had a population of 2,810 in 2002.

Name

Its name is derived from the Serbian word medved (медвед) ("bear" in English), hence the full meaning of the name would be "the place of the bears". In Albanian, the town is known as Medvegjë or Medvegja, an Albanianised version of the name.

       Settlements with absolute or relative Albanian majority are: Gornja Lapaštica(alb:LLapashtica e Eperme), Grbavce(alb:Gërbaci), Kapit, Svirca, Sijarina,Đulekare(alb:Gjylekreshti), Stara Banja(albenian:Baja e vjeter),Ravna Banja(alb:Rama Banja),Sijarinska Banja(alb:Banja e Sijarines) and Tupalla(serb:Tupale).
       Settlements with Montenegrin majority are: Mala Braina and Marovac.

  • Serbian Radical Party (2) Between 1999 and 2001, an ethnic Albanian guerilla organization, known as the "Liberation Army of Preševo, Medveđa and Bujanovac", operated in this region with a goal to secede these three municipalities from Yugoslavia and join them to Kosovo as a part of the Greater Albanian ideal, despite the fact that, unlike Preševo and Bujanovac, the municipality of Medveđa has a Serb majority.
